My friend recently inherited a 145 piece Autumn Leaf Collection.
He would like to sell the whole set. Would anyone be interested?

As I mentioned some time back, my hallcalendarphotos email on comcast is closing out at the end of this month. Check the link for the new address. Many many thanks to those who contributed this year & in past years. Any electronic photos that weren't used this time around are stored in my 2010 calendar file, & I'm slowly adding any paper photos that haven't been used in the last 5 years. New photos are welcome any time of year.

I must have food on the brain. I think the Pretzels should go in the pretzel jar. My recipe for pretzels is from Anton Brown from the Food Network. delicious--would actually get stale if stored plus they never last long.

Trish, Here is the Pecan Pie recipe - click on the weblink

Beverly now has the cadet tart pan so she will have to make the recipe this year. ;)This recipe will make several tarts. I have some new small Hall ones that I will use... Sometimes I make this in a shallow 7"x7" pan or a 8" pie pan. If I don't use a Hall pan, I like to line the pan with baking parchment to make it easy to remove the pieces.

Enjoy

Bill: I love the snow flakes and the "cadet" background.....well, sort of cadet.

Just catching up on the BB and I was sad when I read Arry's words "since we are not having Hall Hauls anymore".........East Liverpool Hauls were so much fun! Do you think we will ever have just "one more" in my lifetime (I am getting older than dirt) so that I could see all the "old buds" one more time.

Arry, I cannot believe that Alex is going to be a senior.....holy cow, where did all those years go? Last photo you posted he was leaning on your new car w/ that look young boys have over cars. How about a new photo - that's a great idea, let's start posting photos of kids, pets, spouses, houses, etc....why not? AND, no new recipes to make in our favorite pieces of Hall for the Hallidays? How about a repeat of that pecan tart. I would love a good sweet potato souffle recipe.

Mary in Michigan - thanks again for my cadet floral bowls. I cannot count the times I have used them and thanked you from afar.

Happy Halling and Cheers To All!
Trish~

Oh, COOL!! Glad to have prompted the discussion about patents, and even happier that I don't have to go looking for them all myself!

Fun with Patents

The US Patent site has always been a fun place to cruise but you could only easily look up patents since 1975. The others could be looked up but you had to know the number or do a lot of searching to find the patents. You could also look in the Patent libraries for the patents by looking through the old patent books. San Francisco has one of these libraries and I spent some time there looking for patents for the refrigeratorware. BUT now GOOGLE made ALL the patents searchable. (Go to Google, choose more at the top, and then scroll down to patent search). I have had a lot of fun cruising for different patents on Google. Not just for Hall but for a lot of other things. If you just search "HALL CHINA" you will find a number of references to Hall patents.

Here is an extra hint though, if you have not done much patent searching in the past. If you go to the link below one of the patents you will find is for a Popcorn popper. This popper is not Hall but the patent refers to another patent in the citations marked as Unknown 1939. This is a patent for a Hotpoint leftover. If then you search for the designer that you find in that patent you will find more patents for Hotpoint pieces. It can be quite a "web" of fun. Not all the patents you find will be for "Hall China" some might be for Hall, China which might be for something in Hall, China Lake California. If you put Hall China in quotes or go to the advanced search you will find a small enough list of items to be fun to look through.

http://www.google.com/patents?q=%22hall+china%22

Gary and Paula have done a lot of this work though (before google patents!) and their disks are the easiest way to find most of the patents! I agree with Bill, if you don't have their disks, you really would enjoy having them.

Have fun!

Message 817 - Bill
If you've purchased one of the discs from Gary and Paula Barnebey, then you would have about 60 patents in .PDF format. They are included on their 2006, Hall China Product Catalogs and Data - CD.

You can still buy one on eBay, here is the item number: 220315201658

They only have a limited number of them left (9 I think) so you should order soon if you want one)

This has TONS of information, and is how I find about 99% of the info on Hall China that I post here on the BB. (and Gary and Paula spent a HUGE amount of time putting this info together, and should get TONS of credit for all that work!!!! Thanks again Gary and Paula!!)

Hey, glad you are enjoying the patents! I have one more here... I think it's the HALL Twinspout. Did anyone else do one? I've seen several variations in handle and embossing, but they were all produced by Hall as far as I know.

The accompanying text is pretty interesting, it has the inventor's thoughts on options that could be added, such as a handle that would fold down, and letters on the sides indicating which compartment was filled with tea and which with water.

I bet there are more Hall patents out there... I'll have to poke around and see what I can find! Not sure three is enough to make a "section" out of, lol.

Under threat of moving the convention, the hotel suddenly has "an option" for the original dates. I am awaiting a call, I'll keep you posted!

Terri, I love seeing the patents! Thanks for sharing the links. Is this a section collectors would like to see included here on the website?

Hi, Bill... I should have clarified, I didn't get a blank page, I just got a blank POSTING page... in other words, when I clicked the "Go back" to edit, there was nothing there to edit! I have a feeling that you're right, it was just a momentary glitch (I am less than impressed with this new computer and Vista...).

If you liked the "Philbe" patent, I also found one for the "Sundial", link above. What I find a bit incredulous is that there are sellers on eBay who SELL copies of these patents! Why would anyone buy such a thing when you can just get a nice ream of parchment paper and do your own?

YUP! It was a glitch, Bill... just tried it again (copying my post this time!), and had no problem at all. Sorry to alarm you. I love the snowflakes, too!!

Beverly - Re: the Convention, any time of year that does not require driving in snow, ice, or heavy fog to places north (Detroit or elsewhere) is great by me.

Bill - love the snowflakes!

Hope all had a happy Thanksgiving Hall-i-day.

Terri, I don't seem to have any trouble with the page(s) or the "go back" page... could you try it again, and let me know if it still doesn't work for you?? (or anyone else... please let me know) I don't know if there's anything I can do to "fix" it, as I didn't see any options on the control page... but perhaps it's a certain browser that is not working. (I use Mozilla Firefox)

Beverly,

I think that is a great idea to move the convention from the spring to fall. Since we are not having the Hall Hauls anymore I think that would be fine. If you ask Barbara, I think that they started having the conventions in the spring so that it would not compete with the Haul so by all means, take the fall. I know for me fall has less going on than the spring because of my kid's school...but that will all end next year as he will be a Senior in high school! I am sure that some of you remember that little 6 year old of mine...where has the time gone?

Terri, thanks for sharing the Philbe patent. It always amazes me how much information Hall collectors can find. I guess that Hall collectors are just amazing!

Mary, what you don't want to spill on yourself looking at the bottom of restaraunt stuff is cream...ask Bill about it. LOL!

Janice: So jealous of the Dresden Windshield. Absolutely love it. There is currently what is once again marked as a Dresden (666) Alladdin on you know where but once bitten, twice shy....afraid to buy it and end up with 2 Delphiniums. Although the pic of this one does look a lot more like the actual Dresden color. Apparently Dresden wasn't a popular color as I just don't see other teapot shapes in that color. Would LOVE a Dresden Hollywood or Los Angeles....but if there are any....they are hiding.

***BILL - POSSIBLE PROBLEM???** The "Go Back" to edit feature didn't work, I got a blank page... thank goodness I could use the browser buttons to go back and cut and paste my post again! Might just be a glitch, but wanted to let you know...

Hi, Beth:

I'm afraid my Whitmyers ("The Collectors Encyclopedia of Hall China") does not indicate when the McCormick teapots were made, but there are a few things I can tell you.

I've seen them with both glazed and unglazed bottoms, but I think the unglazed is much more common. I think the color you have is one of the two most commonly found colors, the other being a burgundy/maroon. There was also a 2-cup size with a raised "McC" on the side, far less common than the larger ones.

My Whitmyers says there is a version with a lid that "locks" into the infusor, completely hiding it and removing it with the loop-handled lid! I'd love to see pics of all these features, if anyone has one of those.

Switching gears... about the Philbe teapot. My Whitmyers is an older one that says their source could "confirm it was a Hall teapot" but could give no other details as to its history. Since there is patent info available on this pot, has the most recent Whitmyers updated its information?

Here's the link to the patent, if anyone is interested in checking it out!

Re Hallitis: I found myself using my tiny makeup mirror to check for Hall markings 3 times last week, in 2 restaurants and a country club. Sure beats holding up a container and getting sauce or whatever down your front......

Hi! I am sure this is not where i should be posting this but maybe someone can direct me to the right location for research.
We found a glossy, green teapot in our basement - in great shape - the glossy green bottom says: MCCORMICK (around top) TEA BALTIMORE MD (in middle)
around the bottom: MADE IN USA

There is a P4 around the white edge on the bottom.

I am sure it is Hall's from what i have read so far - trying to find out about when it was made.
Any help or a point in the right direction will be appreciated!
Thank you.
Beth

From looking at this page - the shape looks very similar to the Los Angeles - but has a few slight differences.

Thanks for posting the calendar pics, Bill. Aren't they great! I would welcome any comments on changing the time of year for the convention. March and April or mid-November work best for me and my busy sporting boys.

I have a 'How you know you have Hallitis', Donna - and I really did this. "You know you have Hallitis when you order the creme brulee at a restaurant because you saw someone else with it and you think the dish is Hall." The dish WAS Hall, and I loved the creme brulee!

A Happy Belated Thanksgiving to All. Don brought me a nasty sinus infection from the college so we both stayed home and had turkey soup. Beverly, the check is in the mail for the 2009 Hall calendar. The picture contributions are so phenomenal that if I had the wall space I would make posters out of them. I don't know if I can wait to find out who built that beautiful custom room divider for their Hall. I have a new "How To Know You Have Hallitis" and this actually happened to me. You are at a restaurant and you order the vegetable melody instead of medley.

Hi all, I was asked to post a "preview" of this years' calendar... so, here is the cover:

And here is a peek inside:

Just an idea Beverly... but how about moving it to a different Month?? There's no reason it HAS to stay in the early spring is there?? Maybe more people could attend at a different time of year? (just trying to think outside the box...) We used to have the Hall Hauls in early Fall didn't we?)

Uggh, of course I didn't realize that the weekend before was Easter. Thank you for letting me know Marilyn!! That will definitely not work, nor would Palm Sunday weekend. That would put us at the last weekend in March or the last weekend in April (which I have already heard the dates are bad for glass collectors.) I am going to have to stick to the original dates and move the convention. When I get back home on Monday I will check with the hotel we were at in Springfield, Ohio.
